Cordeiro Wins MW Offensive Player of the Week

Congratulations are in order for University of Hawaii QB Chevan Cordeiro, who today was named the Mountain West Conference’s “Offensive Player of the Week.”

In only his second career start, the 6-1, 190-lb. redshirt freshman out of Saint Louis School recorded career highs both in passing yards (309) and rushing yards (56), leading the Rainbow Warriors to a 42-40 victory over division rival San Jose State last Saturday. Cordeiro’s official numbers: 23 for 31 (no interceptions) for 309 yards and 3 TDs; 11 rushes for 56 yards and 2 more scores.

Against the Spartans, Cordeiro threw a pair of first-half TD strikes to receiver JoJo Ward (including a 71-yard score) and a third-quarter TD to receiver Jared Smart.

For now, it seems Cordeiro has secured the starting QB position over incumbent Cole McDonald. He is now 2-0 for his career as a starter. With Saturday’s near-flawless performance, Cordeiro has surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for career passing yards at UH (1,065).
