INTERVIEW: Laura Beeman

The Rainbow Wahine basketball team begin their official practices at the end of September and their first game of the 2019 season is scheduled for Nov. 5 versus San Diego State, 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Head coach Laura Beeman is excited to be opening up at home again this year and their “Texas Showdown” themed preseason tournaments that include games against the University of Texas at San Antonio (Nov. 22) and Texas Southern (Nov. 24) in the Bank of Hawai’i Classic; North Texas (Nov. 29 and Texas (Dec. 1) in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown.

Also on their difficult preseason schedule are games at Oregon State (Dec. 6), Washington (Dec. 8), and Idaho (Dec. 21).

It’s just the way we schedule. We always schedule difficult in the preseason to get ready for conference. Last year I think it paid off for us with the finish that we had. We have some youth so there’s going to be some challenges for us, but again we want to prepare for conference and for the postseason.

The other upside of going to Oregon and Washington is being able to bring upperclassman Jaydynn Alexander (Monroe, WA) and Julissa Tago (Medford, OR) home. Additionally, their game at Idaho was motivated by the chance to bring junior center Lauren Rewers (Coeur d’Alene, ID) home during the holidays. Coach Beeman always tries to have her team on the mainland around Christmas time so that players can go home or families can have easier access to them during that time.

It’s part of our recruiting to be able to tell families that their kids are going to be home for Christmas and have a few more days with you. This biggest thing is to get our players in front of families and friends and they really appreciate that.
