Fast Facts: 2019 SoFi Hawaii Bowl

The 2019 SoFi Hawaii Bowl is just two short days away! It’s fairly safe to assume that, for most University of Hawaii football fans, this won’t be your average postseason bowl game at Aloha Stadium. No, for the first time ever, Hawaii will meet rival BYU in a postseason game. The two schools have had classic games in the past, but never with a bowl victory at stake. Of course, ESPN Honolulu (92.7 FM/1420 AM) will bring you full coverage of the Christmas Eve game, starting with “Countdown to Kickoff” at 1:00 p.m. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m., and Bobby Curran and John Veneri calling the action.

Here are a few more facts and stats to help you get ready for the game, courtesy of the good folks at UH Sports Media Relations:

  • The Rainbow Warriors is making its ninth SoFi Hawaii Bowl appearance, second straight, and third in the last four years. Hawaii is 4-4 in the bowl game (6-6 overall in all-time bowl appearances).
  • Hawaii and BYU have met 31 previous times, with the Cougars holding a commanding 23-8 series advantage. Both schools were once members of the Western Athletic Conference and played every year but one from 1978 to 1989. The series began in 1930.
  • BYU has won five straight in the series and 11 of the last 12. This year’s meeting marks the third season that the teams have met. BYU prevailed in 2017, 30-20, at Aloha Stadium. Last year, the Cougars won, 49-23, in Provo.
  • A win by Hawaii would give the Rainbow Warriors 10 wins for just the seventh time in program history – and the first since the 2010 season (10-4).
  • UH will be playing its 15th game of the season, the most in a single season in program history.
  • The Rainbow Warriors have scored 40 or more points in all four of their SoFi Hawaii Bowl wins. In each of its four losses, the team failed to score more than 35 points.
  • UH is on the verge of featuring three 1,000-yard receivers this season. If it happens, it would mark the second time in program history and only the sixth time in FBS history. Currently, Cedric Byrd II has 1,068 yards. Jared Smart needs only 13 yards to reach the 1,000-yard mark, and JoJo Ward needs only 25 yards.
