By Tiff Wells.

November 6, 1981: It’s the first season for collegiate women’s volleyball in the NCAA championship program, and for the Rainbow Wahine, they carried a perfect record (19-0) into November. Head coach Dave Shoji took the team to Los Angeles as UH took part in the UCLA/NIVT. Hawai`i recorded three wins on day one of this non-conference tournament. All three wins came by 2-0 sweeps: 15-6, 15-7 versus Texas-Arlington; 15-12, 15-8 over Pacific AND 15-9, 15-13 against Nebraska. More importantly, these wins kept Hawai`i’s perfect season alive at 22-0. These three wins also guaranteed Hawai`i’s first winning season as an NCAA member and began a streak that is still active today. This on-going streak for the Rainbow Wahine of consecutive winning seasons currently stands at 39 after the recently completed 2019 season (UH went 26-4), which is tied for first in the nation along with Nebraska, Penn State and Stanford.
