Boise State 40, Hawaii 32

The University of Hawaii showed heart and grit late in the second half against defending Mountain West champion Boise State, but eventually fell to the Broncos, 40 to 32. Last night’s loss at Aloha Stadium dropped the Rainbow Warriors to 2-3 for the season. Here are some postgame notes:

♦ TOO DEEP A HOLE: After both teams could only muster a FG in the opening quarter, Boise State took a 19-3 lead into halftime. With 3:38 remaining in the third quarter, Boise State’s lead over Hawaii had ballooned to 40-17. UH shut out the Broncos, 15-0, in the final quarter, but could not overcome the visiting team’s sizable lead.

♦ MISSED OPPORTUNITIES: Trailing by 8 late in the fourth quarter, the UH defense twice forced Boise State offense into third-and-5 situations. On both occasions, however, the Broncos were able to convert on third down and were eventually able to run out the clock.

♦ TOUCHDOWN TURNER: UH running back Calvin Turner continues to be a weapon for the Hawaii offense. Against Boise State, the senior transfer scored 3 TDs (a 1-yard run and 36- and 15-yard receptions). He also scored twice on 2-point conversions. Turner now has 7 (3 rushing, 4 receiving) TDs for the season.

♦ THROW AND THROW AGAIN: Hawaii QB Chevan Cordeiro had a career-high 48 pass attempts, completing 25, for 253 yards and 3 TDs. He also ran the ball 18 times for 90 yards.

♦ NEW WEAPON: After snaring his first-ever reception as a Rainbow Warrior last week against San Diego State, redshirt-freshman Jonah Panoke had 5 receptions for 30 yards against the Broncos. Panoke and Cordeiro were a prolific WR-QB duo in their days together at Saint Louis School.

♦ THE DOMINATION CONTINUES: The Broncos have now beaten Hawaii nine consecutive times. Boise’s average margin of victory the previous eight games was 33.6 points. For Hawaii, last night’s 8-point loss to Boise was the narrowest loss to their conference rival since 2006, when BSU won by 7.

♦ HAPPY HOMECOMING: Former Kahuku standout Kekaula Kaniho came up big for Boise last night. The senior defensive back had 5 solo tackles, including 1 tackle for a loss.

♦ NEXT UP: Hawaii (2-3) will host Nevada 5-0)  this Saturday at Aloha Stadium (6:00 p.m.). The Wolf Pack defeated San Diego State, 26-21, last night in Reno. The Wolf Pack held the Aztecs scoreless in the second half.
