Photos/Video: Champs!

By Jarin Kobashigawa, ESPN Digital Media Specialist.

The University of Hawaii women’s basketball team entered the Big West Basketball Tournament as the No.1 seed after winning the regular-season championship. Surviving and advancing past CSU Bakersfield in the quarterfinal game (48-47) and easing past UC Riverside in the semi-final game (69-55) is how the Rainbow Wahine found themselves in the position to play for the Big West Championship. Hawaii faced the No. 2 seed UC Irvine Anteaters in the championship game.

Playing in the brand new Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nevada the Rainbow Wahine trailed the Anteaters by five points, 26-21, at halftime. But the team came alive in the second half, outscoring UC Irvine 20-10 in the third quarter and 18-12 in the fourth to earn the rights to go dancing in the NCAA Tournament. This is the first time in school history that the Women’s Basketball team won the regular-season championship and the Big West Championship in the same year.

The No.15 seeded Wahine team will take on No.2 Baylor on March 18th in Waco, Texas.
