Farrington rallies past Kalani in OT, 68-55 to win DII title

Gerrard Gallardo scored 17 points and Dominique Mose Smith added 15 points Wednesday night to help Farrington rally past Kalani, 68-55 to win the OIA Division II championship at Radford’s Jim Alegre Gym.

Ernest Rodriguez added 13 points for the Governors, who improved to 5-10 overall and 5-8 in the OIA and earned the league’s top seed in next week’s DII state tournament. Joshua Schutter scored 16 points and Cole Hata added 13 points for the Falcons, who fell to 7-10 and 4-8. They will begin state tournament play on Wednesday, as well.

Kalani jumped out to leads of 7-0 and 12-2 before Mose Smith closed out the first period with a layup to cut it to 14-7. The Falcons then outscored Farrington 12-3 in the second quarter to lead 26-10 at halftime. But the Govs opened the second half with a 10-0 run to cut it to 26-20 and trailed 36-27 entering the fourth.

After Kai Bogle-Dupuis opened the fourth period with a layup to stretch the lead to 38-27, Farrington ended regulation with a stunning 16-5 run to force overtime at 43-43.

The Governors then opened the extra period with a 12-0 surge in the first 1:40 to win going away.
