Rainbow Wahine Stun Top-Seeded Fullerton with Explosive Nine-Run Rally in Seventh

The University of Hawai‘i softball team (33-18), seeded fifth in the Big West Championship, mounted a thrilling comeback with a nine-run seventh inning to upset top-seeded Cal State Fullerton, 11-5, on Thursday at Anderson Family Field. The victory sends the Rainbow Wahine into the semifinals against No. 2 seed CSUN on Friday, May 9 at 10:00 a.m. HT.

Down 5-2 entering the final frame, Hawai‘i strung together 12 straight baserunners, highlighted by Jamie McGaughey’s three-run home run—her 12th of the season—and Milan Ah Yat’s two-run single to take a commanding lead. In total, 14 ‘Bows came to the plate during the rally.

Millie Fidge earned the win in relief, tossing 4.2 innings while allowing just one run and retiring the final six batters.

Hawai‘i opened scoring in the first inning, but Cal State Fullerton responded and built a 5-1 lead by the fourth. The Rainbow Wahine chipped away with an RBI double by Alyssa Nakagawa in the sixth before their seventh-inning fireworks sealed the game.

The win marks UH’s 18th comeback victory of the season and second seventh-inning rally win over Fullerton this year. It’s also the most runs they’ve scored in a single inning since 2012.
