Saint Louis pulls away from Kamehameha, 35-7

By Wes Nakama

Quarterback Mose Lilo completed 11 of 13 passes for 127 yards and three touchdowns in the first half Friday night to help visiting Saint Louis pull away from Kamehameha, 35-7, in an ILH showdown at Kunuiakea Stadium.

The victory improved the Crusaders to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the league standings, while the Warriors fell to 3-4, 2-1. Kamehameha had upset Saint Louis, 28-21, less than two weeks prior on Oct. 4.

But Friday night, it was pretty much all Crusaders, as they jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead in the game’s first eight minutes on TD throws from Lilo to Jordan Nunuha for 9 yards and Jayse Braun for 32 yards. Toa-Rai Ellacott converted both extra points.

The Warriors answered with Hazyn Botelho’s 36-yard scoring pass to Jayden Braun, and Tyler Fujimoto’s PAT closed it to 14-7 with 1:43 remaining in the first quarter. But that would prematurely end all the scoring for Kamehameha.

Saint Louis went up, 21-7, seven minutes into the second quarter after Lilo’s 6-yard touchdown throw to Kingston Siliado capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive. The Crusaders then stretched the lead to 28-7 after Kalai Lee scooped up a blocked 50-yard field goal attempt by Kamehameha and ran it back 98 yards to the end zone with 8:34 left in the third quarter. Lee had been positioned in his own end zone to field a short miss.

Saint Louis later sealed the victory when Nainoa Lopes connected with Siliado on a 17-yard TD pass with 3:16 remaining in the game.
