Hawai‘i Basketball Legend Anthony Carter to Have No. 23 Raised to the Rafters

By: Kennedy Choo

After an illustrious 13-year NBA career, former University of Hawai‘i guard Anthony Carter returns to Mānoa, where his No. 23 jersey will be raised to the rafters of the Stan Sheriff Center.

Carter, one of the greatest players in Hawai‘i basketball history, led the Rainbow Warriors to their first Western Athletic Conference (WAC) regular season title and left UH as the program’s all-time leader in assists per game (6.9). He also ranks third all-time in total assists for a single season (212), a mark he set during the 1997–98 campaign.

A two-time All-America Honorable Mention and two-time All-WAC selection, Carter was named the WAC Pacific Division Player of the Year in 1996–97, becoming the first Rainbow Warrior ever to earn conference player of the year honors, and one of only two in program history to do so.

Among the highlights of Carter’s storied UH career were leading Hawai‘i to a stunning upset over Bob Knight’s nationally ranked Indiana Hoosiers in the 1997–98 season opener, followed a month later by a victory over Roy Williams’ No. 2 Kansas Jayhawks to capture the Rainbow Classic title.

Carter is also one of just four players in program history to score 1,000 career points in only two seasons at Mānoa.

Carter will join Bob Nash’s No.33 in the rafters on February 21, 2026 against UC Santa Barbara.
