Good Reads: Going “Beyond the Game”

As a record-setting championship coach, it’s safe to say that Rusty Komori knows a thing or two about winning. And now, in his latest book, Komori shares key strategies to help others achieve winning outcomes on the athletic field, in the corporate world or in life.

”Beyond the Game: Coaching for Peak Performance in Business, Sports and Life” is essential reading for anyone who aspires to lead successful teams. The book builds on his previous motivational bestseller, “Beyond the Lines: Creating a Leadership Culture to Achieve Extraordinary Results.”

One of his key principles is the necessity of self-improvement. “The best leaders, be they CEOs or sports team captains, are always finding ways to better themselves and their teams,” says Komori, who coached Punahou School’s boys is tennis teams to a national record 22 consecutive state titles. “But before you coach others effectively, you need to coach yourself first.”

As you might expect, Komori draws from examples from his decades of experience as a championship coach, using straightforward terms and useful insights that can help instill and grow a winning culture. Says Hawaii Lt. Governor Josh Green: “As a former competitive tennis player, I was naturally drawn to Rusty’s leadership metaphors and use them extensively in my own team’s development.”
