Maya Gonsalves delivered when it mattered most. The Campbell quarterback and linebacker scored the game’s only touchdown to lead the Sabers past Leilehua, 6-0, in the first-ever Hawaii Dental Service Flag Football State Championship Saturday night at John Kauinana Stadium.
The win capped Campbell’s second consecutive shutout and sixth of the season, earning them a spot in the history books as the state’s first girls flag football champions.
In a tightly contested matchup between two OIA powerhouses, Gonsalves broke through late in the first quarter with a 33-yard touchdown run. Originally a pass play, she saw an opening and scrambled for the score.
Campbell’s defense held strong, stalling a Leilehua drive at the 4-yard line and forcing multiple turnovers. Jaynalyn Sotelo had two interceptions—finishing the tournament with seven—while Aiesha DeWeever added another.
Leilehua quarterback Cali Moniz-Kealoha, battling the flu, managed 41 passing yards before being relieved by Madi Powell, who also played running back, receiver, and defensive back.
Shaleah “La” Moore led Campbell’s defense with nine flag pulls and two pass deflections, earning her Most Outstanding Player honors. She totaled nine sacks and four deflections over four tournament games.
