Mililani Rallies Past Liberty, 31-24, in Season Opener

Mililani opened its season with a statement win, rallying from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat Nevada powerhouse Liberty, 31-24, Friday night at John Kauinana Stadium.

The Trojans trailed 24-14 at halftime but shut out Liberty in the second half behind a strong defensive effort that included two fourth-down stops. Quarterback Hunter Fujikawa connected with Bless Cabrera-Hopkins on a key 35-yard completion late in the fourth quarter, setting up Toa Sam’s 1-yard touchdown run that gave Mililani a 31-24 lead with 2:10 remaining.

Mililani sealed the victory on Liberty’s ensuing possession when defensive lineman Lincoln Uiagalelei intercepted a screen pass with 1:21 left.

Fujikawa, a transfer from Punahou, finished 20-of-34 for 273 yards and three touchdowns in his Mililani debut. Cabrera-Hopkins led the receiving corps with eight catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns.
