After being swept on the road by the Cal State Northridge Matadors, the University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team avenged that loss in emphatic fashion, defeating the Matadors in straight sets last night.

The Rainbow Wahine were firing on all cylinders, racking up 40 kills as a team while committing only nine errors for a .316 hitting percentage on the night. Hawai‘i also delivered nine service aces, treating this match with playoff-like intensity.

Already up 24-14 in the third set, sophomore setter Adrianna Arquette found the ball for a set, setting up a signature play.

As Arquette lifted the ball, sophomore middle blocker Miliana Sylvester slid from her middle pin spot, initiating her trademark Rainbow Slide and slamming the ball down on the other side of the net.

Benches cleared, and the Stan Sheriff Center erupted.

Down 24-20 and facing match point, the University of Hawai’i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team were searching for a spark. After a deflating second set in which Hawai’i managed just 14 points against a sharp Cal Poly attack, the Wahine turned to youth, and found a temporary answer.

Freshman outside hitter Cha’lei Reid delivered a crucial kill through the Mustangs’ block to make it 24-21, igniting the Stan Sheriff Center crowd and breathing life into a potential rally. On the next point, senior outside hitter Tyla Reese Mane kept the momentum going, finding the back row for her 10th kill of the night and cutting the deficit to two.

After a mixed-bag road trip, the University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team is back at the Stan Sheriff Center to continue Big West Conference play, facing off against the Cal Poly Mustangs and the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos.

Despite entering the season as the Big West preseason favorites, the Rainbow Wahine haven’t quite lived up to expectations so far. Hawai‘i holds a 6-9 overall record and sits at 2-2 in conference play. Still, associate head coach Kaleo Baxter and the rest of the coaching staff remain confident in the squad.

In their first conference road trip of the season, the Rainbow Wahine bounced back with a solid win over Cal State Bakersfield, but couldn’t carry that momentum into their next match, getting swept by Cal State Northridge.

Hawai‘i took down the Roadrunners (8-6, 1-2 Big West Conference) in four sets (25-20, 25-23, 25-18, 25-17) behind a huge night from sophomore setter Adrianna Arquette, who recorded her second career triple-double with 14 kills, 28 assists, and 20 digs. She led the team in all three categories.
