Surfing Makes Historic Debut as an OIA Sport
Student surfers from across Oʻahu took to the waves for a historic day as surfing officially debuted as a sport in the Oʻahu Interscholastic Association.
The event marked the first organized OIA high school surfing competition, with student-athletes representing their schools in the ocean rather than on traditional fields or courts. Schools from around the island participated, showcasing the talent of Hawaiʻi’s young surfers.
The addition of surfing to the OIA lineup carries special significance in Hawaiʻi, the birthplace of the sport. Now recognized alongside other high school athletics, student surfers have the opportunity to compete while proudly representing their schools and continuing a tradition deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture.
