Wai'anae surges past Farrington, 34-16

By Wes Nakama

On an emotional night with two teams jockeying for playoff position, visiting Wai'anae overcame a 10-point first-half deficit and surged past Farrington, 34-16, Friday night at Skippa Diaz Stadium.

Sophomore running back Maxumus Quon-Kaleiopu rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries and the Seariders scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to improve to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in OIA Division I. Governors quarterback Kenzo Kawai gained 79 yards on 24 rushes and passed for 79 more yards as Farrington fell to 2-6, 2-3.

The Govs, who began the season at 0-4, took a 16-6 lead 58 seconds before halftime after Kawai's 17-yard touchdown pass to Xayden Faumui -- who snared it at around the 7 and fought his way to the goal line  -- and Lexzyah Faumui's two-point conversion run. Those scores came not long after running back Tabu-Rinthon Nathan was taken from the field by ambulance following a violent take-down that was flagged for a personal foul (unnecessary roughness).

Wai'anae wasted little time in taking the momentum after intermission, with a long kick return giving it possession on the Farrington 44. Four plays later, Quon-Kaleiopu took a handoff and dashed 13 yards to paydirt on third-and-1. He then scored on the two-point conversion run to close the deficit to 16-14.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Seariders built on the lead after a short punt gave it possession at the Farrington 39. Six plays later, Quon-Kaleiopu scored from 19 yards out, and JJ Kaio's two-point conversion pass to Staiyln Stanton-Hernandez gave Wai'anae a 22-16 lead with 9:20 remaining in the game.

"We just had to work together as a team and make some adjustments and figure out what we had to do -- what wasn't working, and what was working," said Quon-Kaleiopu, who is listed at 5-feet-5, 160 pounds and ranks second in the state among DI rushers with 585 yards and is tied for first with 10 TDs. "We just fixed it, and made plays."

The Seariders then effectively sealed the victory with a six-play, 55-yard drive culminating in Quon-Kaleiopu's 16-yard TD scamper that extended the lead to 28-16 with 4:23 remaining. Tyler Perez intercepted a pass on the ensuing series, extinguishing any hopes of a Govs comeback.

"We were up (early), but in the second half we were totally down," Farrington coach Mike Lafaele said. "I think that's what cost us -- we got way too emotional, too fast. We just gotta keep working, it's a young team. It's just a learning experience for all of us. We just gotta keep getting better."

Lafaele said he was impressed with sophomore Quon-Kaleiopu.

"He's sneaky," Lafaele said. "He's a tough runner and a good football player."
