Wally Marciel Retires After 38-Year Coaching Career, Leaves Lasting Legacy at Kailua

After nearly four decades on the sidelines, longtime Hawai‘i high school basketball coach Wally Marciel is retiring from coaching, closing the chapter on a 38-year career that included 36 years in the OIA.

Marciel spent the past 14 seasons leading Kailua High School, where he had the opportunity to coach in the very community he grew up in. During his time with the Surfriders, he built more than just a program—he established a culture centered on unity, belief, and family, guided by the team’s motto, “We Are Together.”

Reflecting on his journey, Marciel expressed gratitude to the Kailua High School administration, as well as the players, coaches, and team moms who supported the program throughout the years.

Marciel now transitions into a new role as President of Damien Memorial School, continuing his impact on the next generation beyond the basketball court.
