In a race to the pylon, Campbell's Tainoa Lave dashed and dived into the right front corner of paydirt with two seconds remaining Friday evening to lift Campbell to a stunning 15-12 victory over Kahuku in a thrilling First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Championship semifinal game at John Kauinana Stadium.

The Sabers (8-3) will be making the school's first appearance in the Open Division state title game on Dec. 5 against Kamehameha (5-4); their only other state championship taste was the Division II win against 'Iolani in 2004. Kahuku, the defending state runner-up, ends its season at 8-4.

Chazz-Michael Kapahu rushed for 148 yards and one touchdown and Valoia Amitoelau added the 11-yard go-ahead TD run with 8:17 remaining Friday night to help visiting Kapolei hold off Mililani, 21-14, to advance to its first OIA Open Division football championship game in school history.

Despite having only 18 players suited up and several of them playing offense, defense and special teams, Eagle Valley (Gypsum, Colo.) took control early and routed Waialua, 51-6, Thursday night at John Kauinana Stadium.

Their campuses lie barely a mile apart, but the Kamehameha football team showed Friday night that it is right now far ahead of Kalihi neighbor Farrington as the visiting Warriors picked apart the Governors, 41-21, in nonleague season opener action at Skippa Diaz Stadium.
